Project Brief

This project involved the construction of two new lecture theatres at the university. The ground floor converted an existing multi-level water feature, which covered large areas of the forecourt, into a regular concourse and auditorium space. The initial design incorporated substantial concrete infills, but this approach compounded requirements for the lower level strengthening.

Mainzeal proposed an alternative system utilising high-density expanded polystyrene sheet, which was covered with a mesh-reinforced concrete slab. This greatly reduced the cost of making all areas level, while also reducing the load on the basement. The interior lobby spaces feature stainless steel wall panels, broad bands of colourful Marmoleum, and bleached pine wall panels, all meticulously detailed.

The lecture theatres have state-of-the-art equipment and technology, and incorporate extensive sound insulation. Mainzeal also fitted out new office floors within Rutherford House. These feature the MONZ aluminium joinery suite. Jarrah reception benchtops and sprayed metallic curved wall panels add flair to a highly functional and stylish fit-out.
