Project Brief

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corporation opted for a radical new office design when the company built the first of two new manufacturing facilities at East Tamaki in 2001. The office and plant arrangement worked so well that when the time came to expand the premises, the company chose to duplicate the design and construction.

Mainzeal, the company contracted to build the first building, and later a 100m extension, was again commissioned to construct Stage 3.

The single-level building reflects Fisher & Paykel’s open management philosophy and flat hierarchy – as do the open-plan layout and the extensive use of glazed walls throughout the office.

The structure incorporates a 23,000m2 concrete slab, with structural steel columns, trusses and roof framing. In the production and warehouse areas, these trusses span up to 38m.

Another key point of difference for this project was the need to provide tight tolerances – the whole building is air conditioned and has to comply with the strict clean-air environment regulations demanded for the manufacture of healthcare products.
