Project Brief

Mainzeal was awarded the contract for the Arena grandstand upgrade, with work commencing in late May 2004. Much of the existing grandstand, including the top 10 rows of bleachers and existing top floor had to be demolished while construction in other areas commenced. This proved a challenging task for the team, with a lot of pre-planning and methodology undertaken to ensure continuity. The new stand has four levels, all accessible from two stair towers and a lift.

The new concourse to Level 1 includes two bars, a food and beverage area, and toilet facilities. Level 2 accommodates the television media area, and includes a high-level camera platform. The corporate area on Level 3 extends the length of the stand, and is cantilevered over the grandstand seating. With floor-to-ceiling glazing, the sportsfields can be seen from all areas. The ground floor houses the main reception area and lift lobby, the Manawatu Rugby Union and Arena Manawatu offices.
