The New Plymouth Pak ’n Save supermarket project involved the construction of a large retail warehouse with an underground car park, retail at ground level and three mezzanine floors for staff, administration and plant.

The project was complicated by the discovery on site of a large gulley with a freshwater spring. This necessitated extensive excavation work, dewatering and low-level sub-soil drainage to reinstate the ground. Construction involved the erection of concrete pads and columns, and precast elements, including walls, Dycore units, double Ts, Unispan slabs, beams and shell beams.
The main warehouse is built from structural steel and features a Colorsteel roof.The project posed a number of additional challenges for the Mainzeal team, including the need to provide extra pipework and numerous in-rack sprinklers to meet new fire safety compliance requirements.
