Project Brief
Metro New World is located in the former baggage area of the historic Wellington Railway Station. The new supermarket, which is accessible from the entry hall and the busy concourse, is a key element in the revitalisation of the iconic station. The project involved the fit-out of a new retail area and back-of-house facilities, including freezers, chillers, food preparation areas, administration and staff amenities.

A new coffee kiosk was also designed and built to blend in with the historic surroundings. A key consideration for Mainzeal was the preservation of the historic elements within the landmark building. Many of the existing features have been incorporated into the design, either in their original location or carefully removed and relocated to prominent positions. Where minor demolition works were undertaken, items such as ceramic tiles and dados were carefully removed and saved for reuse and repairs elsewhere in the building.
Another big challenge for the project team was the need to construct the new glass and steel structure on a busy concourse used by more than 50,000 people each week. The team effort meant the project could be completed in five months, allowing the supermarket to be operational prior to Christmas 2006.
