The stand is covered by a cantilevered structural steel roof at a height approximately 28m above the stadium field. The stand is 100m long, consisting of large precast concrete elements (raking beams and bleachers) and in situ concrete columns and beams.

A project of this scale required innovative solutions and the team developed a truss girder formwork system for constructing the 30 tonne free-spanning raking beams in situ in the upper levels. This system minimised the use of lower-level propping while maximising the work faces available.

The massive size and complexity of this project made it unique and challenging to all those involved. The extensive amount of concrete required to complete the project added further constraints due to limited availability in the market at the time. These potential issues were well managed and minimised in the day-to-day operations.

One significant challenge was the contract requirement to provide 3,000 seats by 17 March 2004, only four months after the project started, for the first game of the rugby league season. Mainzeal exceeded the client’s expectation by providing 3,500 seats for this event. Continued access to the stand was provided for all Warriors matches that season, along with availability for other events, such as the Big Day Out. An emphasis was placed on creating innovative construction methods to minimise the duration of the construction period and to ensure these requirements were met.
