Project Brief
The Visy Recycling Facility is a 4000m2 state-of-the-art waste material recovery facility, and the first plant of its kind in New Zealand. The plant has the ability to process recyclable material from Auckland and Manukau City Council areas.
The facility is constructed on an old landfill area, which is subject to landfill gases and subsidence. Consequently, the building sits on steel piles founded in basalt, with a gas-proof membrane fitted under a post-tensioned slab. This design allows for heavy machinery to be used anywhere in the building, with no structural movement.

The building, which has a 15m-high roof, is made from structural steel supplied fully fabricated from China, and clad in long-run sheeting. The coil for this was also supplied from China. More than 8000m2 of interlocking paving surrounds the building.
The office area features exposed aggregate black oxide precast panels, and has both solar and heat pump hot water supplies and rainwater harvest tanks.
