Project Brief

The Canterbury Charitable Hospital Trust was established to assist Cantabrians who are not on a Public Health waiting list for elective surgery. The hospital is staffed primarily by volunteers and carries out day surgery procedures to deal with cataracts, hernias and carpal tunnel.
This was a unique project and a first for New Zealand. It involved transforming an old run down villa in suburban Christchurch into a fully functioning day surgery with operating theatre and ancillary rooms.
The hospital build was funded by donations from the wider Canterbury community and with discounted pricing from Mainzeal, and various suppliers and subcontractors.
Many of the old character features of the original villa had to be retained and blended in with modern essentials of a fully functioning operational hospital.
The existing roof had to be removed and re-pitched to create space for the new plant room to service the operating theatre and recovery rooms.
