Project Brief

Mainzeal delivered the four stage project to construct two additional levels and to reconfigure and refurbish three existing levels of the existing Christchurch Women’s Hospital.
The works involved the creation of the new Urology ward along with the expansion and refurbishment of the existing Birthing and Recovery areas.
The construction of the 2-level clip-on included the installation of several large structural steel beams and concrete floor slabs. The work occurred above an occupied ground floor space so a temporary roof was constructed before any of the existing roof was removed. Sections of this temporary roof were removed at times to allow materials to be dropped in, but predominantly the construction process including steel erection and concrete works was undertaken by small track cranes from within the tent.
The temporary roof remained in place until the entire envelope was completed including the membrane roofing, Alucobond cladding and aluminium curtain walling.
Throughout the refurbishment on the second and third floors, the construction team was working amongst a hospital environment so great care had to be taken, especially in the area of infection control.
The fast-track project required close attention to detail and meticulous planning to satisfy the many significant challenges that were presented, including the project scope increasing substantially.
The entire delivery team worked well with the Client to finish the project to a high quality standard and leave CDHB and the hospital users very pleased.
