Project Brief

The opening, blessing and public day was an opportunity for Mainzeal to show our support for the Nelson region. The $6m aircraft hangar is designed to accommodate maintenance work for a number of aircraft.
The 80m x 60m x 15m cream-coloured multi-rib clad building can be seen as one commutes to and from the terminal.
The hangar will accommodate both daily and heavy maintenance work to aircraft and can house five Bombardier Q300 airplanes or four ATR72-212A aircraft.
The project included one of the largest single roof lifts ever undertaken in New Zealand. The structural steel roof was built on temporary frames approximately 2.3m above the ground. This necessitated the hydraulic jacking of the 391 tonne steel roof structure, which had most of the roof cladding and much of the services already installed. The 7.7m of jacking took place over five days.
Another interesting feature of the project was the 4650m2 post tensioned floor slab. It required 740m3 of 40MPa concrete and was poured over a 16–hour period from a Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. This was the largest single pour post-tensioned slab in the South Island.
On August 14th Prime Minister John Key officially opened the hangar.
We received positive feedback from the visiting public and executives about the construction team and hangar.
Air Nelson/Air New Zealand executives commented often on the fact that the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
This project shows another great example of Mainzeal’s Building Certainty.
