Project Brief

The client’s brief to build a “unique, functional and state of the art” winery in the middle of their vineyards brought some creative minds together. Tendering on the open market on a P&G Margin basis, Mainzeal was awarded the contract for the Civil and Building works that ran in parallel with the separate services and plant contracts. With sufficient pre-construction time to plan and integrate the various contracts, this $80m plus project was ready for vintage some three weeks early.

The Architects solution to enclose the different heights of stainless steel tanks in a tiered drape-curved roof, providing as much natural light as possible in the Press Gallery with clear-light sheeting and containing the Plant and Process Rooms in exposed aggregate precast concrete panels successfully minimised the scale of the project. Extensive use of glass, concrete, zincalume and stainless steel in functional details with clean lines adds to the building.

Although simple on the eye, the overall design was technically challenging and demanded a “can do” attitude with innovative thinking and planning. That the client has gone on record post-contract as saying “the best contracts are those that are signed, then do not need to be looked at again, regardless of the pressures and challenges the project throws up” bears testament to the level of teamwork, commitment, integrity and professionalism developed within the delivery team.
