Project Brief

Mainzeal has recently constructed the latest addition to Massey University’s expanding Albany campus.

The new library building is the second stage of a building complex to further develop the campus Information Services.

The project involved the construction of a new five level concrete structure, fitted out with interior and building services to suit current and future building uses and demands. The existing temporary library building (completed back in 2003) is also undergoing an interior refurbishment including a café, group study/training rooms, and staff offices, which will integrate with the new building.

Mainzeal’s estimating team was able to work closely with Massey University and it’s consultant team, during the early cost planning stages, to produce a Target Outturn Cost (TOC). This gave Massey University the cost certainty necessary for the project.

With Mainzeal’s early involvement and shared project goals, it was a quick and easy decision to enter into a Partnering Charter with agreed objectives and expectations of time, budget, communication, management, quality and relationships. This helped achieve a ‘no surprises’ goal, while ensuring the team celebrated its success throughout the project.

The site team was challenged with completing this project which joined onto the existing library. Noise and activity restrictions were put in place to ensure both staff and students were not affected by the construction activities.

Construction works were overseen by Massey University’s own Clerk of Works. This allowed for the Opus consultant team to have continual eyes and ears on the coal face. A high standard of quality was maintained for the duration of the project.

Mainzeal’s Site team was able to construct the project and assist with a seamless decant process, with no effect on the day to day running of the functioning University.
