Project Brief

Mainzeal’s role in Project Century – the construction of the new East Tamaki brewery for Lion Nathan – proved to be an ideal launching pad for the company’s new Sustainable Construction Strategy. The project won the first Cement and Concrete Association of New Zealand (CCANZ) Sustainable Concrete Award at the 2009 annual New Zealand Concrete Industry Conference.
CEO Peter Gomm says the strategy, is part of a business imperative to ensure Mainzeal’s practices are sustainable from economic, social and environmental perspectives.
“The Govt3 procurement programme already requires all government departments to practise sustainable procurement – and that’s just one example of where the market is heading. For us, this means continuing to be innovative in the way we approach new work, and making some changes to the way we operate day to day.”
For Project Century, Mainzeal and concrete supplier Holcim undertook an extensive R&D project to develop a reliable, high-strength concrete mix utilising recycled crushed glass as a substitute for virgin aggregate, which is in short supply.
Project Data:

Location:
Auckland

Client:
Lion Nathan
Project Century utilised glass sourced in Onehunga and concrete produced in East Tamaki – just a few minutes’ drive from the project site. This has resulted in a significant reduction in emissions associated with transporting aggregates from outside the Auckland region.

The brewery is now operational. Drive past on a sunny day and you will see a twinkle in the precast concrete and asphalt parking area. Venture inside and exposed concrete slabs will reveal the sparkle of sustainability at work!
