Project Brief

Mainzeal worked in partnership with Carter Holt Harvey to complete the construction
of New Zealand’s largest laminated veneer lumber plant at Marsden Point, Northland.

The first stage involved the construction of the largest timber-framed building in the Southern Hemisphere.

The structure houses glue manufacturing facilities, a composer, scafer, continuous press and a billet processing line, all installed by Mainzeal. The construction of an administration building was also completed and extensive site works undertaken.

The second stage followed with the construction of a large extension of the Stage 1 building to house the lathe, clipper and dryer, which are used in the process of turning the peeled logs into veneer for the manufacture of laminated veneered lumber.

Extensive civil works were also undertaken. These included the provision of four large log yards, a dirty stormwater pond, clean stormwater facilities and the associated site works of roads, vehicle parking areas and lighting.

Included in this stage was the construction and installation of a 30MW heat plant, log end, green waste, dry waste plant and large log conditioning chambers.

This allows Carter Holt Harvey to be totally self-sufficient and enables the company to fully process logs from its forests to produce high-quality laminated veneer lumber for national distribution and export.
