Sustainability

Mainzeal is committed to becoming New Zealand’s leading practitioner of sustainable construction. Our 5 Year Sustainability Strategy covers key areas including procurement, greenhouse gases and waste.

Staff Training and Awareness
Mainzeal has developed a two part sustainability training series for our staff.

The first course Introduction to Sustainable Construction is aimed at all Mainzeal staff and covers broad global environmental, social and economic issues. The training relates these issues back to the building industry and gives all staff a greater awareness of how they can affect positive change through their role in Mainzeal.

Part two of the training is a comprehensive full-day course in Advanced Sustainable Construction, aimed primarily at Mainzeal’s operational staff.

Our goal is that all staff will develop an appreciation and understanding of what sustainability means, and how it is applied to the built environment through the development of truly sustainable buildings and construction techniques.

Reducing our Operational Footprint
Mainzeal is committed to reducing the energy, emissions and waste produced in our operations. In order to achieve targets of emissions and waste reductions, Mainzeal has commenced sustainability reporting using the 2008 year as a benchmark. Data is collected by regional operations and channeled to our Sustainability Manager who prepares national sustainability statistics.

Environmental Certification and Policy
In 2008 Mainzeal achieved ISO 14001:2004 accreditation – the benchmark standard for an effective Environmental Management System.

Mainzeal also holds the Eco Warranty Registration from International Certifications Ltd which ensures our environmental management system and procedures are industry best practice.

Government Recognition of Leadership
In June 2009, Mainzeal was honoured with a Highly Commended award in the Businesses Making a Difference Category of the Ministry for the Environment's Green Ribbon Awards. Mainzeal is the first builder to receive the award in its 19 year history.

The award, presented for our “contribution to a sustainable construction industry in New Zealand” demonstrates that Mainzeal's approach to sustainable building has struck a chord with the environmental voice of New Zealand – The Ministry for the Environment.

What truly sets Mainzeal apart is that despite this success, we recognise that we have only just begun our journey to sustainability. Incremental improvement is not a genuine solution. It's time to start rethinking the fundamentals of construction.
